Applications Open for the Dónal McKeating Bursary

This theatre directing bursary is applicable for all Lir Academy alumni.

Following on from the successful launch in 2023, The Lir Academy at Trinity College Dublin is thrilled to announce the opening of the application process for the annual Dónal McKeating Bursary award for emerging directors. This award has been made possible with the support of Dónal McKeating and director Marc Atkinson Borrull.

The award was piloted in 2023 with the acclaimed production of Enda Walsh’s Bedbound co-produced by Landmark Productions and Galway International Arts Festival, and directed by Marc Atkinson Borrull. The inaugural recipient was MFA graduate Effie Spyridaki.

This year the bursary award will centre around The Misanthrope by Moliére in a new adaptation by Matthew Minnicino. Running at Smock Alley Theatre from July 14th it is being directed by Marc Atkinson Borrull and produced by Marc Atkinson Borrull and Molly O'Cathain in association with Once Off Productions

Applicants for this amazing opportunity should be available from June 16th to August 3rd.

Deadline for application is May 9th at 5pm and interviews will be held the week beginning May 12th online or in-person.

Please email alumni@thelir.ie with your CV and your suitability for this bursary.

The bursary allows for an assistant director position to be created and remunerated at an industry-standard rate. The award also includes a travel and subsistence allowance as well as several one-on-one mentorship sessions with Marc Atkinson Borrull.

Thanks to the generous support of Dónal McKeating, this is now an annual award, made available to graduates of The Lir Academy.

There will be another opportunity for a similar award later this year, as part of the new academic year.
