DUBLINERS
by James Joyce. Adapted by Michael West and Annie Ryan
"Better pass boldly into that other world, in the full glory of some passion, than fade and wither dismally with age." The Dead
In Dubliners, James Joyce offers an astonishing and enduring portrayal of the city – a mirror in which the people of Dublin, as Joyce once wrote, could take “one good look at themselves”.
As the stories move from childhood to maturity, Joyce’s characters yearn for escape, for validation, for status, for love. They are shocked out of innocence, arrested by cowardice, plagued by failure and meanness, haunted by missed opportunity, memory and a deepening consciousness of the end.
Director Annie Ryan with writer Michael West have reconfigured their 2012 production for Dublin Theatre Festival in a new, contemporary production for The Lir Academy that brings Joyce’s iconic stories into the Dublin of today – revealing the flaws, hopes, dreams and struggles of Dublin life that are every bit as vivid, rich, funny and brutal and as they might have been one hundred years ago.
